Service Tax for credit cards has finally been imposed as at 1 Jan 2010.
Thankfully it will only be charged on the anniversary date.
Indirectly, its also a way for us who have many credit cards to use this as a way to consolidate and simplify our life.
So what have I done to avoid being charged service tax?
- Cancelled my citibank Air Asia card in Dec 2009 [anniversary date: Jan]
- Cancelled my HSBC Master card in Dec 2009 [anniversary date: July]
- Applied for new MBF card with 0% bal transfer deal for 12 mnths in Dec 2009
- Redeem almost all my points on Standard Chartered Credit Card
- Cancelled MBB Petronas Visa card in Dec 2009
- Cancelled MBB Ikhwan Amex card in Dec 2009
- Cancelled my Alliance Ikea card in Jan 2010 [anniversary date: Feb]
Moving forward, i need to do the following to avoid the credit card service tax:
- To cancel MBF lady card in April 2010
- To redeem HSBC points and cancel HSBC Visa card in June 2010
Am still contemplating whether to cancel the following:
- Maybank Petronas Visa Ikhwan card [very tempted to cancel apart from the thought in case I need to sign up 0% EPP plans in future and maybank always accepted everywhere]
- Std Chartered Visa card [coz they have sure-win contests which I hv won RM50 last yr, and iPod this year]
I will keep and endure the RM50 service charge on the MBB Gold AMEX card, as that gives the best deal. 5x points on grocery, bookstore purchase & petrol, 3x points for autopay mobile bill, 2x points for other purchase.
What have you done to avoid being charged service tax?

Credit Card Service Tax..its here whether you like it or not
Saturday, December 12, 2009
When will Service Tax on Credit Card be imposed?
Have called the banks to ask, their answer is to wait. no need to cancel your card yet.
But how long to wait? cancellation doesnt take effect immediately..so when want to cancel also must strategise properly.
This is agonising! RM50 per card is unnecessary money to waste. That can pay 30 days of my breakfast every morning.
The only good thing is MBF have announced that they will cover the RM50 service tax. So if you want to save some cash, can apply MBF cards. Not only that, they have even came up with the 0% power balance transfer offer, as long as you spend minimum RM300 per month.
So if you've got to pay telco/utilities bills /petrol..then RM300 can easily be met.
Heck...if can delay payment & invest your cash instead..why not right?

SMART 2008 Malaysia - day 3 review
SMART 2008 ended yesterday...and it ended on a high note.
The final day was better. I felt better and less marketed at.
The day started with Stuart Tan's presentation, which I reckon was the session I learnt most from.
I guess combining his NLP expertise made the whole presentation engaging, entertaining, informative and yet relaxed.
His offer was good, so I signed up for it.
Then it was Million Dollar Mike up next, speaking on copywriting.
and more offers..
It was then breakout session time...but we were all already starving by then..
I saw Patric Chan there, so managed to speak to him for a while.
Then its lunch break...they ordered domino's pizza only! and even more dissapointing was the fact that most of the speakers went out to have lunch on their own...at that time i was really even more dissapointed to have paid the RM699...coz other ppl who came in for free also had a lot of opportunities to interact with the speakers without having to go lunch with them.
After lunch it was the talk by ewen chia..which ended with a very tempting offer, and with so many ppl scrambling to join.
Since i had already signed up for stuart's offer..i think tt is sufficient.
then lastly it was the closing comments by all speakers..and the whole session ended about 5.30pm.
Overall, i find that i did get to know many ppl...and look forward to work with them in the Internet Marketing arena here in malaysia.

SMART seminar 2008 - day 2 review
Honestly, feeling kinda tired of being marketed at.
Although I had gone to this event knowing that there would be offers after each speaker speaks..yet..its just way too much!
The day started with presentation by Donna Fox on marketing to women. Then offers for participants as usual.
Next up was Simon Leung, talking on the secrets he learnt from google, since he worked for google last time..
Then, a very tempting offer was made.
Lunch break, we went to a Thai restaurant at the Lower ground level of Midvalley.
I didn't bother trying to network with the speakers.
Was just talking to the participants seating near me.
(I was already feeling that its kinda wasted that I paid RM699 , coz even though upgraded as Platinum member meaning lunches with speakers... but I wasn't in the mood to network anymore. Was just so tired of being marketed at).
Imagine how would your day be like meeting insurance agent, MLM people, unit trust people, toys salesmen, all within a span of 8 hours... wont you just get tired of all the sales talk? especially since I am not in the shopping / buying mood, and don't wanna fork out more money.
After lunch, it was a talk by Mark on product creation...and more offers.
Last for the day was Lee and Robins, talking about hybrid marketing.
and the most expensive offer to date.
The funny thing was that, when I was walking out of the hall after the day ends, some of the participants were actually quite turned off with the joking and fooling around style of Lee and Robin.
Apparently the uncles are pissed that they don't seem professional and serious in their presentation.
As for me..I had no feeling already by then... I was just so hungry and looking forward to leave.
Then went out for mamak session with some of the SMART seminar participants.
Had a good time getting to know the people and so now I've found a new group for discussions and masterminding.
Trow is last day of SMART Seminar 2008...we'll see how it goes..

SMART Seminar Malaysia 2008 - day 1
Its the first day of SMART Seminar Malaysia 2008.
This the first time its held in Malaysia.
Definitely exciting as I had been looking forward to attending it for the past few weeks.
I had prepared new business cards and looked forward to the networking opportunities.
Sure enough, once the event started at 9am, I was busy getting to know people seated around me.
Amazingly, many of them are way older than me. That's one thing I noticed when going to Internet Marketing events / previews/ seminars...
its mostly the uncles and aunties who are keen to know and mostly are newbies.
Where are the youngsters ?
I guess they are contented with their life at the moment, enjoying it with their parents money or their new salary.. that the issue of finding more income does not cross their mind.
Anyway.. the SMART seminar 2008 started with opening by Stuart Tan and Simon .
Then it was a round of intro of all the speakers.
Then, the first speaker up was Robert Puddy, who spoke on membership sites.
then as expected, came the special offer for the SMART seminar participants.
After that, we were broken up to small groups, and the speakers rotated around each group and spend about 20 minutes each, answering queries etc.
Then came lunch, and I got to have lunch with the speakers being in the Platinum group .
It was at a fusion restaurant at midvalley, nearby chilli's.
The service was bad and confusing with the staff from China.
kinda gave a bad impression of malaysia to these visitors from US and UK.
the food was ok, but I wouldnt pay for a meal there in future.
Then after lunch, another round of breakout session.
Then it was a presentation by Anik Singal.. which spoke on how to make money as affiliate using pay per click..
and of course, more offers for participants..
Also met Gobala Krishnan from Internet Millionaires Club and his staff Joey.
Overall, it was an informative day..I wonder what Day 2 of SMART seminar holds for me ...
